​Marrakech records a 63% increase in arrivals last May

Tourist activity in Marrakech recorded a 63% increase in arrivals last May compared to the same period of 2019, according to the Regional Delegation of Tourism in Marrakech. The increase in arrivals during the month of May is attributable to the good performance recorded by residents (+167%) as well as non-residents, in particular the main tourist emitting markets, including Italy (+23%), the United Kingdom (+56%), France (+39%), Spain (+41%) and Belgium (+39%), explains the said Delegation in a press release. And the same source reports that overnight stays recorded the same upward trend, with 51% compared to the same period of 2019, reports MAP. Regarding room attendance, the occupancy rate improved by 23 points compared to the same month of 2019 to reach 72% during the month of May, adds the same source. Since the beginning of the year and at the end of May 2023, Marrakech has seen an 11% increase in its declared overnight stays compared to the same period of 2019 and a 12% increase in its arrivals, specifies the same source. , noting that “tourist activity in the Ocher City has thus surpassed the figures for 2019, the reference year”. And the regional tourism delegation in Marrakech added that the year 2023 has started under good auspices and that the tourism sector in Marrakech is picking up and returning to growth. At the same time, during the month of May, Marrakech-Menara International Airport experienced an increase in air traffic compared to the same period of 2019, recording a volume of commercial passenger traffic of 624,029 against 493,126 passengers welcomed during May 2019, an increase of 27%. This trend is in line with medium-term forecasts, even though the tourism sector will continue to evolve in a promising way, particularly with the opening of new airlines. This strong recovery in arrivals is also accompanied by a remarkable increase in the volume of tourist investment, explains the same source. Indeed, during the first five months of the current year, 159 projects related to tourist accommodation were authorized, with a bed capacity of 7,850 beds and an investment amount of 538 million dirhams, which provides the creation of 5,028 direct jobs, we read in the press release.
