The village of Merzouga is located about a 10-12 hour drive (around 600km's) from either Marrakech or Fes. It is about 45km's southeast of Erfoud and roughly 25km's west of the Algerian border.
Erg Chebbi is the local attraction. This "Saharan erg" is a sea of rolling, wind-blown sand over 25-30km's long by 5-10km's wide. The dunes are constantly shifting in size and shape, reaching over 150m in height. The erg takes on different colours depending on the time of day. There is very little vegetation to be seen.
There is "black desert" in the area, which is a dark and desolate, flatter contrast to the bright browns & oranges of the rolling erg. There is a lake about 3km's west of Merzouga where flamingos can be seen (when there is water present).
Camel Trekking or 4x4 excursions with guides can is available to explore the area , overnight, or multi-night trips onto the dunes.
